Countywide CTE Programs

      The Shiawassee RESD, in cooperation with Baker College of Owosso, Memorial Healthcare, and Mane Street Academy of Hair Design, offers a variety of classes for any student wishing to embark on a unique learning experience.  The classes listed on this page are available to students attending high school in Shiawassee County.  These classes take place off campus at the facility listed in the class description.  Students wishing to enroll in any of these classes should contact their counselor(s) for more information.

The following classes are being offered during the 2010 - 2011 school year:

Automotive Services I: Electrical/Electronic Systems 1 & 2                                                                 

Earn college credit in the Automotive Services Electrical/Electronic Systems Program! This course helps prepare students to perform successfully on the state technician’s certification test for automotive electrical systems. The state certification is required for all persons who work as specialty technicians or master technicians in Michigan.

 

Instructional Topics include:
  • Computerized testing
  • Principles of electricity
  • Advanced diagnostic techniques used to analyze system problems
  • Charging, ignition and diagnosis of basic electronic faults
  • Basic electrical system components such as wiring, batteries, starters, and alternators
  • Analysis of automobile electrical/electronic systems, including using an Ohmmeter to check continuity and measure resistance in electrical/electronic circuits and components

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

       AST099      Introduction to Auto Tech                2 Credits
       AST111A    Introduction to Auto Electrical         5 Credits
       AST112B    Electrical/Electronics Systems 1    5 Credits
                                                                            12 Credits

This program takes place on the Baker College of Owosso Campus in the Technology Center.  Program runs from 7:30am - 9:15am, Monday through Friday for the duration of one school year.


Automotive Services II: Suspension, Steering, and Brakes
                                                                     

Earn college credit in the Automotive Services Suspension, Steering, and Brake Program, which will prepare students to perform successfully on the state certification test for automotive brake service and automotive suspension and steering.  The state certification is required for all persons who work in positions as specialty technicians or master technicians in Michigan.

 

Instructional Topics include:
  • ABS brake systems
  • Alignment techniques
  • Types of wheels and tires
  • Diagnosing system problems
  • Design and operation of drum and disc brakes
  • Suspension and drive systems for front and rear drive vehicles
  • Steering mechanisms and suspension components

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school, have a minimum 2.0 GPA, and have completed Auto I or pass an automotive waiver test.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

       AST231A    Automotive Suspension/Steering     6 Credits
       AST112B    Automotive Brake Services             6 Credits
                                                                            12 Credits

This program takes place on the Baker College of Owosso Campus in the Technology Center.  Program runs from 7:30am - 9:15am, Monday through Friday for the duration of one school year.



Computer Networking
                                                                                                                              


Earn college credit in the Computer Networking Program, which will prepare students for entry-level positions as computer service/repair technicians.  Students will learn about computer hardware components and the networking software used to connect them, as well as gain hands-on experience installing and configuring Networks.  This program will help prepare individuals to take the qualifying examinations, which may lead to certification as a CompTIA A+, Certified Computer Technician, and/or Network+ Certified Network Technician.

 

Instructional Topics include:
  • Printers and Portable systems
  • Basic Networking
  • System files and management
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting
  • Safety and preventative maintenance
  • Configuration and upgrading of PCs and work stations
  • Evolution of the Windows family of operating systems
  • Computer hardware and operating system concepts, including memory functions, the boot process and disk fundamentals
  • Issues relating to data communications and networking technologies, such as OSI model, network topologies, protocols including TCP/IP and the funamentals of internet working 

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

       INF111       Information Systems Theory                              2 Credits
       CIS106A    Introduction to Operating Systems Concepts       4 Credits

Graphic Web Design
                                                                                                                                

Earn college credit in the Graphic Web Design Program, which is designed for students interested in the world of graphic design and/or web design.  It responds to the rapidly growing need for specialists able to organize and present information in a creative, yet understandable way.  Students will be introduced to the newest concepts and applications required in this "Information Age" and gain hands-on experience in graphic design fundamentals and web page creation.

 

Instructional Topics include:
  • Desktop publishing
  • Emergent technology
  • Web page and website design and layout
  • Effective use of space, color, and animation in web pages
  • Common Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) programming techniques
  • Basic techniques for image adjusting, retouching, manipulating and combining
  • Use of industry-standard web page development tools such as Macromedia Dreamweaver MX
  • Two-dimensional space design elements including point, line, plane, shape, mass, scale, composition and color
  • Use of industry-standard, image-editing graphics tools that allow designers to produce sophisticated web and print graphics 

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

This program takes place on the Baker College of Owosso Campus in the Technology Center.  Program runs from 7:30am - 9:15am, Monday through Friday for the duration of one school year.



 Health Science Academy                                                                                                                  

Earn college credit in the Health Science Academy Program, which will provide students with exposure to a variety of health care occupations.  The curriculum and core tasks are based on National Health Care Skills Standards.  Between classroom instruction and clinical rotations, students will learn hospital procedures, medical terminology and abbreviations, legal and ethical aspects of medical practice, CPR and have the opportunity to job shadow with hospital staff.  Nine one-week clinical rotations along with instruction will give students the basic skills necessary to obtain entry level employment in general health care positions.

  • Vital signs
  • Health care systems
  • Hospital procedures
  • Communication skills
  • Employability skills
  • Release of medical information and confidentiality
  • Medical terminology related to blood systems
  • Legal, ethical and bioethical aspects of medical practice
  • Medical abbreviations utilized in healthcare fields
  • Emergency procedures such as CPR and First Aid
  • CPR Certification

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.  In addition, students will need to provide a high school transcript, an essay, and teacher recommendation.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

       MED103    Medical Terminology    4 Credits

This program takes place at the Memorial Healthcare Annex on North M-52 in Owosso.  Program runs from 7:30am - 9:15am, Monday through Friday for the duration of one school year.



 Heating, Ventalation, and Air Conditioning                                                                                      

Earn college credit in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Program (HVAC), which will introduce students to the operation, installation, trouble shooting and maintenance of heating and cooling systems with a focus on residential forced-air heating and air conditioning units.  Students will receive hands-on experience with heating and cooling equipment.  This program will prepare students to perfom successfully on the EPA Certification exam for air conditioning technicians



Instructional Topics include:

  • Use of multi-meters
  • Safety standards
  • Forced-air heating and cooling systems
  • Electricity and electronics, including the implementation of both
  • Electrical and mechanical control of heating and cooling systems
  • Electrical nomenclature, electrical symbols and schematic diagrams

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

 Introduction to Health Occupations Program                                                                                     

Earn college credit in the Introduction to Health Occupations Program, which will provide students with exposure to the purposes and career opportunities available in a healthcare setting.  Coursework in this program will prepare the student for a variety of certificate and associate degree programs such as: Patient Care Aide, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Therapeutic Massage, Medical Receptionist and other Medical Office degrees.  Students will examine the complexity of the American healthcare system, healthcare delivery models, medical terminology, basic human anatomy, and legal concepts for medical practice.

 
Instructional Topics include:
  • Health care systems
  • Communication skills
  • Employability skills
  • Medical terminology related to body systems
  • Legal, ethical, and bioethical aspects of medical practice
  • Medical abbreviations utlized in healthcare fields
  • Basic structures and functions of the human body

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.


College Credits:

       In addition to earning high school credits, students will earn the following Baker College credits:

This program takes place on the Baker College of Owosso Campus in the Health Science Building.  Program runs from 7:30am - 9:15am, Monday through Friday for the duration of one school year.



Cosmetology                                                                                                                                     


The Cosmetology Program will prepare students to perform successfully on the State Cosmetology Board, a requirement for those who wish to work as licensed cosmetologists in Michigan.  Along with classroom instruction, students will gain hands-on experience performing a variety of treatment operations including care and beautification of the hair, complexion and hands.


Instructional Topics include:
  • Tools and sanitation
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Fingerwaves, pincurls and rollers
  • Comb out techniques and back combing
  • Braiding
  • Hair wrapping, blow drying and thermal hair styling
  • Hair cutting and styling
  • Permanent and temporary hair coloring
  • Wig and hairpiece care
  • Facials and makeup
  • Hot waxing and eyebrow arches
  • Manicures, pedicures, blended tips, acrylic sculptures and overlays
  • Communication and business skills
  • Mini-boards for state preparation

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must earn a passing grade and maintain a minimum 1.7 Cosmetology GPA to remain in the program.  Any student who is more than 39 hours behind at the end of the semester or summer session will be removed from the program.


Calendar of Dates:
      All students attend Monday from 1:00pm - 5:00pm, Tuesday through Friday, 1:00pm - 4:30pm and a minimum of one Saturday per month from 8:00am - 3:30pm.  The summer between junior and senior year of high school, students are required to attend Tuesday through Friday, 8:30am - 4:00pm and Saturday, 8:00am - 3:30pm for six weeks assigned session.  Cosmetology classes are held at Mane Street Academy on North M-52 in Owosso.



 Nail Technician                                                                                                                                  

In the Nail Technician Program students will learn and practice fundamentals of a variety of treatment operations for the nails.  Students will learn the basic understanding of anatomy of hands, feet, as well as nail anatomy, diseases and disorders.  Along with classroom instruction, students gain practical experience with clientele.

 

Instructional Topics include:
  • Manicures
  • Pedicures
  • Silk wraps and acrylic overlays
  • Sculptured nails
  • Gel nails
  • Hand, arm, and foot massage techniques 
  • Nail art
  • Aroma therapy
  • How to market/sell products and services
  • Professional image, salon business, mini-boards for state preparation

Program Prerequisites:

      Students must earn a passing grade and maintain a minimum 1.7 Cosmetology GPA to remain in the program.  Any student who is more than 39 hours behind at the end of the semester or summer session will be removed from the program.
