Early Childhood Special Education Programs and Services

All children develop differently. Some children are born with conditions that make developing new skills difficult. They may have difficulty hearing, speaking, moving, playing with toys, interacting or getting along with others, or doing things for themselves. In order to succeed these children may need Special Education services/programs.

In Michigan, the special education system is available to children from birth and goes to age 26. Shiawassee Regional Education Service District (RESD) provides a full range of services and programs for children birth through six who are determined to be eligible for Special Education. In order to be eligible, a child must have an evaluation. During the evaluation process the family’s concerns and input are valued and incorporated into the final evaluation report and program planning. All services are free if the child is determined to be eligible for Special Education and all services are included in a written Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that is developed by the team, which includes the family. The continuum of services includes the Infant Toddler Program and Early Childhood Special Education Services/Programs.

Children birth through five, receiving Special Education may also attend the playgroups offered through Shiawassee ABC.
