Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA)
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a federally funded employment and training program. The Shiawassee RESD WIOA program serves youth 14-21 years of age. To qualify for the program, students must meet federal, low income guidelines and meet one or more of the following barriers to employment:
- deficient in basic literacy skill (at or below grade level 8.9 in reading and/or math)
- juvenile offender
- foster child
- homeless or runaway
- pregnant or parenting
- student with a disability
Students develop job skills through employment in public, private, or non-profit organizations.

The Shiawassee RESD WIOA program is a partner with MichiganWorks!, various community agencies, the Shiawassee RESD work study program and all eight school districts.
